Genovese, Amethyst, Thai, Bush Basil
4 plants in 4 x 2.5 inch multi cell pot.
Genovese:This is the classic Italian basil. It produces large flat or slightly rounded leaves with an aromatic and rich flavor prefect for pesto. Genovese Basil grows into large 24-30 inch plants with 3 inch leaves. I’ve found that it does best picked regularly. At the end of the season I make extra pesto for the winter and dry leaves for the spice pantry.
Amethyst: This is a beautiful Genovese-type deep purple basil. We love this basil in a salad with the garden peach tomatoes. It has purple flowers and can be used in cut flower bouquets.
Thai: A must have in our garden. We use Thai basil for curry, soup, and sauces. It has a delicious flavor with hints of anise and clove. The plants are beautiful with tall purple stems and flowers. One the our honey bees favorite plants.
Bush: A few years ago I grew this basil because I wanted something cute in a pot on the porch. Well now I am hooked. It really is beautiful in a pot, but also adorable planted on the edge of a garden. The dome shaped plants stay small and compact. The flavor is of strong spicy-sweat basil and works well sprinkled on pasta, salads, and soups.
LIGHT PREFERENCE: Sun
SOIL REQUIREMENTS: Moderately rich, moist soil. Basil is not drought tolerant and can be damaged by heat stress. Regular moisture throughout the growing season helps to ensure a good crop.
PLANT SPACING: 4-8"
HARVEST: Begin light harvesting after plants have become established. It is best done in the early morning when the temperature is cooler and the leaves are less likely to wilt. A full harvest should be completed just before the plants start to flower. Cut the entire plant 4-6" above the ground to promote a second growth. Leaves are easily bruised when picking, so handle carefully. Do not store at a temperature less than 50°F (10°C).
